The Dugout

Answer #13 Last updated: 11/14/2012
Runner Contacts Batted Ball
Nobody is out.  Runner on 2nd base.  Batter hits a ground ball up the middle (left side of 2nd base) that passes all the infielders and can not be fielded by any other fielder.  The runner coming off 2nd base then inadvertently hits the batted ball with a foot and the ball rolls out-of-play.  What do you have?  Back to Quiz

2 base award from the time of the pitch.

Runner starting from 2nd gets home.  Batter gets 2nd base.

Nobody on the defense did anything wrong in this play, yet the offense player that kicked the ball gets 2 bases.  At first, this may not seem fair, but if you think about it, had the ball not hit the runner, the base hit would most likely had scored the runner from 2nd, and the batter might also have made it to 2nd base.  So, in the end, the 2 based award (by rule) is not that unfair after all (rule 8-5-I.4 EFFECT).
